When Diana was a little girl her father encouraged her to volunteer for an elderly home, the eight Earl Spencer was a very charitable man and wanted his children to learn the value to hard work and charity.

Diana took this a step further with William and Harry taking them to visit the homeless, many feel that the main purpose of these visits was to show William and Harry that life is not all palaces and servants. Of course that was a big part of it, but I also feel that Diana wanted her boys to see that homeless people are human beings not criminals. Society does seem to have this habit of dehumanising homeless people by saying “Don’t give me money he’ll spend it on drugs” or “there is plenty of help out there they just need to get it.”

Diana wanted the boys to listen to the homeless people’s stories and understand that they were not just homeless in a physical sense but in an emotional sense. A lot of homeless people are aware that there is help but they can suffer from such a low self worth and fear of failure that they actively avoid help.

People can be homeless for various reasons, they are escaping from an abusive home/partner/parents. They have been throw out by their family, they could have lost their family turned to addition and through that lose all the money and it can happen to anyone. By showing William and Harry these people she lay the foundations for two very open minded young men who know not to dismiss people off hand but to always listen and by thankful for all the blessing they have.
